A few weeks ago I found out a good friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer.  Being the health nut and bandwagon junky that I am (most recently jumping on the raw food bandwagon) I was curious to see if my new-found passion could help my friend. After some research I happened upon a few websites that were great, among them welikeitraw.com.  Below is a link to a fascinating article about raw food, toxins, the “cancer industry” and how eating a raw diet can help in the fight against breast cancer.

The Benefits of Juice Fasting

About a year ago I did my first juice fast for a week.  It was two days of feeling hungry and a little weak, and five days of amped up energy and concentration with a hint of calm.  Since then I’ve been hooked.

I’m not entirely sure why I decided to fast last year, but this year when I noticed my body starting to feel more toxic—my skin was getting bad, my workouts weren’t working out, my energy was dropping by the day, and I just felt disgusting; I decided it was time for a good ol’ fashioned detox!  So, why did it a take juice fast for me to feel so good?

Well, juicefastforhealth.com attributes this to a boost in the immune system.

Most of the processed foods eaten in today's society produces an acid ash in our systems. The alkalizing foods, such as greens, veggies and the non-sweet fruits, certain grains and nuts, and other whole, natural foods, are often not as prevalent in our diets as is necessary. Since we are over 70% water, our internal fluids need to be kept pH neutral just as any backyard swimming pool. Our miraculous bodies are at work constantly to keep our internal world neutrally balanced, but when more acids accumulate in our body than our natural elimination systems can discharge, we start to become too acidic.

Eventually our cells are drowning in acid wastes, our system begins to slow down and we literally begin to slowly decay from the inside out. We begin to have overgrown amounts of yeasts and fungi, and as they devour the excess sugars and acids, we enter the initial stages of deterioration. We get ill and have low energy. We have aches and pains, don't sleep well, can't focus, have poor memory and arthritis. Our immune system by this time has become greatly weakened and our body shows signs of imbalance. Fortunately, it is reversible, simply by changing your internal terrain through fasting and slowly adjusting to healthier foods.              Along with this the site lists many other benefits of juice fast, all of which I have experienced.
  • a cleansed and regulated colon,
  • weight loss (fat, not water),
  • balanced pH and blood sugar levels,
  • strengthened immune system,
    • This is one of the main reasons I started the fast this year.  I was sneezing a lot and could defiantly feel a cold coming on.  That and most people around me were getting the flu.  Around day three the sneezing stopped and I felt great!  It was explained to me that most of our energy is used digesting foods, so when our bodies don’t have to  digest foods it can focus energies elsewhere.  In my case, keeping viruses out.
  • increased mental clarity,
  • loss of cravings for sugar and other stimulants,
    • I even stopped craving fruits that are high in sugars and stuck to just veggie juices.  That’s not to say fruit isn’t good for you, but on a juice fast too much sugar can lead to headaches.
  • cellular cleansing and rebuilding,
  • diminished toxin load,
  • diminished pains and allergies (some disappear completely),
  • blood, tissue and organ cleansing,
  • restored liver function capacity,
  • increased energy levels,
    • Just be warned, on a juice fast your sleep patterns will change.  I could run on about three hours of sleep with the feeling that I had at least eight of the best hours of sleep of my life.  It was wonderful, and I got so much done.
  • and an enhanced sense of joy and lightness is usually experienced.

If you at all feel like your body could use a little pick me up, I highly recommend juice fasting.  For more information on it check out: http://www.juicefastforhealth.com/fasting.html

In the past few months I have become more and more engrossed in the raw foods movement.  As a vegan I love my fruits and veggies so raw food seems to be the next step in my ever-evolving diet.

I encourage you to check out this fantastic article from Oprah.com about the health benefits of the raw foods diet:  http://www.oprah.com/article/health/wellnessandprevention/pkgfuelyourday/20091020-orig-raw-food-probiotics-macrobiotics
